Five Generations a Growing
by Ursula Enright
Enrights bar on Main Street has been many things to many people down through the years. Five generations
of Enrights have managed the business. Donal, the fifth Enright to be at the helm has taken over the
reins from Mikey Joe this very year. The Business in earlier years was not only a public house but also a
shop selling general merchandise.
The Enrights originally came to Moyvane from Pulleen, Tarbert. Dan was the first Enright to serve behind
the counter. He was married to Ellen McElligott of Moyvane. Mick Dan, married to Katie Walsh of
Leitrim East, was the next proprietor. Dan, his son presided over the business after his father's death in
1924. He married Hannah Buckley of Knockanure, Listowel in 1930. He died at the young age of 42 in
1942 in Beamount Hospital, Dublin leaving the business in the hands of his wife Hannah. She managed
the business with her children Mikey Joe and Kathleen (now Mrs. William Stack, The Hill) until Mikey Joe
took over in 1956. Mikey Joe, who married Peggy Horan of Castleisland, ran the business with his wife
and family until this year. Donal, who is the fifth generation of Enright's has now taken over the running
of the Pub. However, Mikey Joe continues to keep a 'look in' on things.
The original pub was knocked down and a new one was built in its place over a nine month period in 1967.
The new Bar reopened for business on December 19th 1967.
Here's just a few reminders of the price of the pint in the good old days from pub records:
1964 1/6
1971 3/-
1976 25p
1984 £1.25p
2000 £2.00
